Winnipeg General Strike

In 1919 the Winnipeg General Strike was one of the most influential strikes in Canadian history. The General strike had a big impact on Canadian identity because, it showed that as Canadians we can take care of our own matters, without any help from the British. It also showed some improvement on Canadian identity because of the unions that were created to strengthen their bargaining ability.

Week 3.

The three ways Canada moved away from Britain was clothing, music, and dance styles. Canada's women started to wear clothing that showed their ankles and anything under the knee. Also the music like jazz, started from America and Canadians started to listen to it more. Also the dance styles were seen as inappropriate and some people didn't like it. This dance style was people dancing and moving more than what people think they should. None of these styles started from Britain.

WWI Propaganda Poster Project

The message of this propaganda poster is to raise money for the soldiers so they can get paid, have artillery, and to pay for food. The secondary reason this was used, was to get more men in the war thinking that they would be paid $500 000, that is why they put this poster up. The target audience for this poster is men wanting to go to war and rich people to donate to the army so they can win the war. The techniques that are used in this poster is visual appeal, emotional appeal, and patriotism.

The Treaty Of Versailles

The treaty of Versailles was not harsh enough on Hitler because after everything he did he did not get put in jail he got to live and still have his army just not as many men and he had to pay fines for what he did also. when the treaty was made i think that they should have made it so that Hitler was not allowed to kill anymore and that he wasn't allowed to even have his own army. I believe this because of how many men he killed and in our time now we would have had life in prison. i think that a man that could cause so much damage to families and a religion should have been taken of this earth. i do not believe that he should have had the right to be among people who are normal and killing all those men women and children was not a human thing to do.

world war one propaganda

http://www.thevintageposter.com/ArtDetail.asp?Size=med&Inv=11721\
The message of this propaganda is to enlist for war today. The intended audience for this propaganda are grown men. Techniques that were used were visual appeals. This propaganda poster makes me feel like i want to enlist today for war. This poster shows that if all your buddies are in war, then why don't you join right away with them. Its meant for grown men because women at the time didn't go in war they just stayed home and worked.

WW1 poster

I chose this picture because it shows how they only want men for the war because it was all about the men back then then they decided to bring the women into the war as medics and use them to help heal/recover the army men i think that both genders should be in the war because then we would have more fighters and if we have more fighters then every other country were more than likly going to win against our rivals and other country i believe that we would do alot better in war with both men and women because we would have more fighters killing the other country it would be like we have 2 armys and the other country only has one.http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/en/explore/online/posters/pics/16180_your_chance_770.jpg

Fresh Fish Propaganda

http://www.ww1propaganda.com/ww1-poster/buy-fresh-fish-save-meat-our-soldiers-and-allies

This poster is talking about in WW1 how they need meat for the Canadian soldiers so if you weren't in the war you would go to the butcher and all they would have to offer were fish because all the meat is going to the Canadian solders. Meat gives the soldiers gave them the most energy. It was also very easy to cook. This picture is telling you to give all your meat the the Canadian army and you have to eat fish instead.

WW1 Propaganda Blog

One cool Canadian propaganda poster I found is

In this poster the message is that if you are good at something that would help Canada in the war then you should do it. The intended audience is Canadian citizens because those are the people that help fight for Canada. Some techniques that are used are, Visual Appeal and Patriotism. I think it is visual appeal because it shows all the different hats and it catches your attention by showing all the positions you can contribute to in the war. I also thinks this is patriotic because it is saying to fight for Canada.

\

week two

the treaty of Versailles is too harsh because the allied powers expect Germany to pay for everything.I think that Germany should have no military but the soldiers should become the border patrol.I believe that they do that because they are over qualified to protect Germany. that would give Germany some indipendence

For Canada, to remember and to serve....

This is a poster for Canada, it's a poster to remember and to serve. This poster says that no matter what happens, you always got to be prepared, if you are a women or farmer,or even a slave. The poster also states that even if you are not a soldier, you can still represent Canada country and independence, you don't  need other countries to support Canada's side because you are also intelligent. The way of this type of propaganda proves that Canada doesn't give up because we are Canadian and will stay Canadian. The army needs us because we are Canadian. Without this poster, farmers, woman or slaves WILL not support the army and only buy victory bonds. That is why this poster is for Canada, there to remember and to serve.

gas alarm rattle

The best thing that was in the chest was the gas alarm. The reason i think this is because i think it was one of the most useful things in ww1 because it warned all the troops that there was gas coming so they could put their gas masks on and live. all the gas alarms were made out of wood and hand made. The gas alarm rattle was also referred to as "policeman's rattle" because they were similar to models used by civilian police. The first use of poison gas during the first world war took place at the second battle of ypres, the german army released large volume of chlorine gas.

WW1 Gas Masks

The coolest thing in the box was the gas mask this was cool because it came with a handsome caring case, it fit around your neck and hung down to the side of you so that it would not interfere with the soldiers weaponry well in battle. the peruses of the mask was to help Canadian soldiers with mustered gas attacks . The mask would filter the gas out of the air so they could breath. Another thing in the box was a gas rattler what it did was when any one in the Canadian  trenches would smell gas they would sound the rattler to warn all other Canadian soldiers to put there gas masks on.

All Young Men, This is Your opportunity to be Recruited

All young men wanted!!
You could be the one that makes a difference.
This poster is intended for young men only.
We are wanting to give you an opportunity of your life.
This was used to be a catchy slogan.
I will most guarantee you that this will get stuck in your head because it is impounded in mine.

WW1 war helmet

My favorite item in "the box" was the helmet because of its beautiful olive color and it kept the army men safe and if someone attacking them had a spear and it the attacker went for the head the spear would just bounce off of the helmet and keep the army man safe and if an attacker shot at the helmet it would deflect off of the helmet and it would leave a puncture in the helmet another reason i liked this helmet was because of its style so if it rained the water wouldn't get in your face and effect your eye sight and that is why i like the WW1 war helmet. http://imgarcade.com/1/ww1-canadian-helmet/

3 Worst Things About Trench Warfare

The worst 3 things about Trench warfare were The gas, Trench foot, and The death count. The gas was horrible because the Germans sent Mustard gas into the Canadian trenches and the Canadians have never seen anything like this before and it would eat away at their skin. They found a was to slow down the burning by peeing on a towel and covering there face. Some other countries had gas masks but they didn't really work. Trench foot was another horrible thing of WW1. There would be mud in the trenches and the Canadian soldiers would be in it all day and the bacteria would infect your foot and you would not be able to walk and in some cases you would lose some toes. They had to change their socks lots during the war to lessen the chances of catching trench foot. Another thing that was terrible about trench warfare were the death count so many people lost there live holding the front line for Canadians. They would be shot from other countries they would get hit with mustard gas.

The three worst things about trench warfare

One of the worst things about trench warfare had to be the fact that if it rained it would fill your trench with water then your socks and shoes would get wet and you could get infected sores from your feet being so soaked. When your sores would get infected, if the infirmary didn't have any antibiotics you might have to get your foot amputated. Another bad thing about trench warfare was the mustard gas. The mustard gas would slowly burn you from the inside out if you breathed it in and if you didn't have a gas mask you would have to pee on a cloth and put it around your face so you wouldn't be able to breathe in the deathly chemicals. The last bad thing about trench warfare was if an enemy was to throw a grenade into the trench you would either have to get out of the trench or try and throw it back. If you couldn't run away from the grenade then you would more than likely die. Thank you for listening to my views.

week one

the three worst things in trench warfare are the pests, the gas attacks and the poor response to the newly injured. The pests are the worst possible thing to have in the trenches because they can carry millions of germs which can kill or seriously harm you. next I would like to explain how the gas attacks can be the second worst, these are second worst because the chemical are chlorine and hydrogen. lastly the medical team is too slow because by the time that the team arrives their patiaint might be dead.

Example Propaganda post for week

One of the options for this week (Feb 20) is to choose a Canadian propaganda poster from World War One and analyze it.  To do this you need to start with a google image search for "Canadian World War One propaganda poster". Even with this very specific search it is possible that you will find posters from World War Two, or from countries other than Canada.  Choose carefully.

After you choose your poster, you need to get the URL for the image (not the website).  You will copy this (Ctrl C), then in your blog choose the icon that looks like a picture in a frame, select "From a URL" and paste (Ctrl P) the URL you copied.  You also need to cite your source (give credit to whoever posted it before).  You can do this by citing the website that posted the image you used - like I did below.

image from: www.warmuseum.ca

The URL for the image was really long, so I shortened it to the important part, then using a link, I included the whole URL that will take the reader to the image on the website.

You should do this whenever you use an image from the internet.

If you choose this option for your post, you then need to analyze the poster like the class did with Ms. Nixon on Thursday.

World War One - War At Sea - Torpedo

The Torpedo

The Torpedo is a underwater aircraft missile that was shot from a ship or submarine which will explode when the target is reached.

How They Were Used

Torpedo's were made mostly to blow up targets. Germans used these to blow up any ship there was that were carrying goods from America to Britain.

The top 3 worst things about the trenches.

The top 3 worst things about the trenches were Trench Foot, the gas, and the living conditions. Trench foot is where water would collect in the bottom of the trenches and the soldiers would have to stand and sit in the water. This was the worst things about trenches because the water would make the skin on their feet soft so it would pretty much start falling off their feet or peeling off. Trench foot would suck, it would be so painful because your foot is slowly falling apart and its gross. The second worst thing is the gas. You never knew when t was coming and when is finally did you had to leave the trench. When you left your now in no mans land and a most likely going to get shot. So either way your probably dead. The third worst thing was the living conditions. The food was bad, you were in a whole made of dirt and you had to sleep in it. It would be crowded with lot of people so there was no room. Over all the trenches would suck

Blog Week 1 " The Three Worst Things About The Trenches "

There are so many horrible things about the trenches in WW1  and well for this activity i have to pick three so here we go. So I'm going to start with the rats that fed on the dead bodies in no mans land, and in the trenches. these gross creatures were not normal rats they got up to the size of house cats and were just nasty eww. The next worst thing about is the trench foot this nasty thing happens when the soldiers feet are wet for long periods of time. the skin on there feet peels of leaving the feet sore painful and deformed. The last and worst thing is gas attacks there horrible, yet the worst thing about gas attacks is the un predictability of then the gas could waft back into your own trench and it cant identify enemies from allies therefore making the use of gas a war crime.

Vimy Ridge

Hey guys, what do you know about Vimy Ridge from WWI? I love the battle of Vimy Ridge, I think its one of the greatest battles in history. What I find interesting about it is that Canada put up a fight and did not care what happened as long as they won the battle. They were probably the bravest at that time of the war.       This is an image of Vimy Ridge in France but owned by Canada, its amazing how big the monument is. Its massive!!!!

WWI Top 3 Worst Things

The top 3 horrible things in WWI trench warfare were rats, trench foot, and THE GAS. The reason that rats are the worst of them all is because the rats carried diseases that could kill a man or make them deathly ill. The reason trench foot is one of the worst is because your feet would fall off and you wouldn't be able to run towards the enemy and shoot them before they shot you. The reason THE GAS is the worst of them all is because the gas made by the Germans would burn yourself from the inside out. This is the reason these are the top 3 worst things in WWI. EXPLOSIONS!!!

Now this I never knew...the last battle of WWI would be this scary...

War at Sea was a between the Britain and Germans, half of all of the merchant shippings were sunk by the Germans. During the war, submarines(U-boats)were big of an impact at first. U-boats were first made by the Germans. The German`s submarines were responsible for sinking half of the British boats and of all the British`s food and supplies. The U-Boats were not the only effect that effected the war, mines were successful too. Mines were used as a defensive skill to create a boundary of protection from U-Boats. THIS IS WAR AT SEA

Welcome to Blogging!

We will be blogging in class weekly. Your blog posts will be part of your mark for the class.  It is your opportunity to share what you've learned the past week in a slightly more casual way.

Things to remember as you blog:

  • Anyone can read this!  Make sure you represent your self, the class and the school in an appropriate manner.  I would like to encourage other members of the school community and your parents to read our blog.  Be respectful of your readers and the members of class, including the teacher.
    • So? Use proper English language conventions (spelling/grammar) not 'text speak'.  Don't be critical of class members.
  • Blogs allow multimedia opportunities.  Your post can (and should) include things in addition to your own writing.
    • Like what?  You can insert images or short (less than 3 minutes) videos that add to your message or ideas.  When you do this, make sure that you tell your readers what they should get from the images or video.  Use phrases like: "You should notice in the video that..." or "This image clearly shows..."  You can also add hyperlinks (like I did there) to other pages or definitions to help the reader.  Aside: I prefer that hyperlinks  open in a new page (like I did there) so as a reader, I don't lose my original spot.
  • Blogs should be interactive.  Your writing should encourage your readers to respond.  Write with that in mind.
    • How? Ask a leading question, encourage feedback, say things that people will want to respond to.  BUT try to avoid just be argumentative for argument's sake.
Each week you will be allowed to choose from a couple topics.  Choose the topic that most interests you, or that you think you learned the most about and can start a conversation about.  If something else came up in class that you want to write about, just ask - it's likely fine.
